US Citizens Over 50 Years Turning to Dating Sites

US Citizens Over 50 Years Turning to Dating SitesMore than quarter of a million people have used a dating site launched by the AARP, a non profit group catering for the over 50s in the US, since its launch a year ago.

The success of the site “HowAboutWe” reflects a trend in America which has seen demand for commercial online matchmakers soar among the over 50s.

It is now the fastest growing part of the dating market in an industry worth an estimated $2 billion a year.

According to the latest statistics 45 per cent of Americans over 65 are either single, divorced or widowed.

Demand for the AARP’s site is at its highest in the winter and early spring, with Saturdays the most popular day in the week for seeking companionship.

Among the 50 plus men and women receive roughly the same number of responses, while in the 24 to 34 age group it is female posters who gather the majority of interest.

A study by the AAARP – formerly the American Association of Retired Persons – found that New York, Cincinnati and Cleveland were the most responsive cities for over 50s seeking a new partner.

Men fared best in Albany and Dallas, while women over 50 living in New Orleans and Cleveland were the most likely to find a suitable match.

“HowAboutWe” – short for how about we do something such as go to a concert – is one of a number of companies which have seen business soar especially among baby boomers.
